The sound of silence is the noise that a heartless society makes. The narrative is that people don't really communicate or understand each other. That's because we're not using our heart which truly understands with an intelligence that is superior to the mind's intellect. The person in the song doesn't begin to see the unconsciousness around him, until he gets a vision in the darkness of his soul. He sees that he has no heart and that he is actually sleeping, unconsciousness, and it makes him very sad and lonely, in a transcendental and mystical way.
